Dinosaur Game

Dinosaur Game is the pixel T-Rex runner that started life as the Chrome offline error page back in 2014. You play a little dinosaur sprinting across a flat desert, and your only job is to not hit anything. The road never ends, so the real question is how long you can last.

It is free, it runs in your browser, and it takes about two seconds to learn. The catch is that the game keeps getting faster the further you run, which is where most attempts fall apart.

What is Dinosaur Game?

It is a one-button endless runner with 8-bit graphics and a side-scrolling view. The dinosaur runs automatically from left to right, and obstacles scroll toward you: cacti on the ground and birds (pterodactyls) at different heights. You jump over the low stuff, duck under the high stuff, and your score climbs the longer you survive. There is no finish line. You play until you crash.

How to play

Press a key to start the dino moving, then react to whatever the desert throws at you.

Desktop controls

  • Space or the up arrow to jump
  • Down arrow to duck
  • Press space again to begin a new run after you crash

Mobile controls

On a touch screen, tap to jump. The game works on phones and tablets the same way it does on desktop, just without the keyboard.

Reading obstacles

Not everything wants the same response. Cacti and low birds need a jump. A bird flying at head height needs a duck instead, so do not reflexively jump at every shape that appears. The highest birds clear the dino entirely, so you can ignore those and stay on the ground.

Scoring and speed

Your score is just distance. Every step the dino takes adds to the counter, and the game nudges the speed up as you go. That speed increase is the whole difficulty curve. Early on you have plenty of time to see a cactus and jump it. Deep into a run, obstacles arrive fast enough that you are reacting on instinct.

The counter caps at 99999. If you somehow reach it, the score rolls back to zero and you keep going.

Tips for a longer run

  • Time your jumps for where the dino will land, not where it is now. At high speed the gap closes faster than you expect.
  • Tap to jump rather than holding. Short hops put you back on the ground sooner, ready for the next obstacle.
  • Duck under high birds instead of trying to out-jump them. Some sit at a height you cannot clear.
  • Watch the spacing between paired cacti. A double cactus needs a slightly later, longer jump than a single one.
  • When the speed ramps up, stop watching the dino and watch the right edge of the screen where obstacles spawn.

Why it works

The whole thing runs on one decision, made over and over, slightly faster each time. That is enough. There is nothing to manage and nothing to read, so a crash is always your own fault, and that is exactly what makes you tap restart. Google's UX team built it as a joke for the offline page, and people ended up playing it around 270 million times a month.
