Worms.Zone

Worms.Zone is a free .io arcade game where you steer a hungry worm around an open arena and eat your way to the top of the board. The longer you survive, the bigger you get.

It plays in your browser with one hand on the mouse. The catch is that growing makes you a slower, fatter target, so staying alive gets harder the better you do.

What is Worms.Zone?

It is a multiplayer growth game in the same family as Slither.io, but with worms instead of snakes and a lot more going on. You start small, slither toward scattered food, and grow your body segment by segment. Other players are doing the same thing, and you all share one map. Run your head into another worm and you die. Cut someone off so they crash into you, and you inherit the pile of food they leave behind.

How to play

Move toward food, avoid head-on collisions, and use your speed boost to cut off worms that are bigger than you.

Desktop controls

  • Move the mouse to point your worm where you want it to go
  • Hold the left or right mouse button to boost
  • You can also use the left and right arrow keys to turn and the space bar to boost

Mobile controls

  • Drag your finger to steer the worm
  • Tap and hold the on-screen button to boost

The cost of boosting

Boosting is your main tool for hunting and escaping, but it burns your score. Every burst shaves length off your worm, and the bigger you are, the more each boost costs. When you are small, boosting is cheap, so chase food and pick fights freely. Once you are large, save it for the moment you actually need to cut someone off or slip out of a trap.

Game modes

There is more than one way to play, and the modes change the pace.

  • Infinity: the standard mode. Keep growing until you crash.
  • Time: a seven-minute round with double points and coins.
  • Treasure Hunter: hunt down treasures placed around the map.
  • Seasonal: limited-time modes that show up around holidays like Christmas, Halloween, and Easter, with their own rewards.

Power-ups

Power-ups appear as potion bottles around the arena. Grab them mid-run for short bursts of an advantage. There are six kinds.

  • Red and blue: widen your capture radius so you pull in more food.
  • Blue: counts the food you eat as five times its normal value.
  • Purple: shows where other worms have died, which means a lot of free food.
  • Green: makes your worm faster.
  • Round green: tightens your control so you can dodge collisions.
  • Yellow: zooms the camera out for a wider view of the map.

Coins also drop around the map and go straight into your stash.

Outfits and upgrades

Coins and levels unlock cosmetic outfits in the wardrobe on the main menu, from plain worms to louder color schemes. The upgrades you buy in the menu do not make your worm faster or stronger in the arena. They only improve how strong or how long the power-ups you find during a match last, so spend with that in mind.

Tips for a higher score

  • Hunt the blue potion. It multiplies eaten food by five and is the fastest way to bulk up.
  • Use purple potions to find the spots where worms have died, then circle in for the leftover food.
  • When you are small, boost often to outrun threats and grab food before others reach it.
  • When you are big, boost rarely. You are slow and every burst costs you score.
  • To kill a bigger worm, swing your head in front of theirs so they crash into your body, then eat what spills out.
  • Stick to the edges early if the center is crowded with large worms.

What makes it work

The tension comes from your own success. A small worm is quick and slippery and can dart through gaps. A huge worm scores well but corners like a truck and shows up on everyone's radar. So every run turns into a question of when to stop being cautious and when to gamble on a boost, and most deaths are your own fault, which is exactly why you start another round.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Worms.Zone free?
Yes. It is free to play in your browser with no download required.
How do you play Worms.Zone?
Steer your worm with the mouse, eat food and power-ups to grow, and avoid running your head into other worms. Cut rivals off and they crash, leaving their food for you.
How do I speed up my worm?
Hold the left or right mouse button (or the space bar) to boost. It drains your score, so use it carefully. The green potion gives a temporary speed boost that does not cost you anything.
What is the fastest way to grow?
Grab the blue potion. It counts the food you eat as five times its value, so your worm bulks up much faster while it is active.
How do I eat other worms?
You cannot bite them directly. Cut your head in front of a rival so they crash into your body, and they drop all the food they had collected.
Can I play Worms.Zone on mobile?
Yes. The same game works on touch screens. Drag to steer and hold the on-screen button to boost.
Is there a mobile app for Worms.Zone?
Yes. As well as the free browser version here, Worms.Zone is on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
